Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship for African Students, 2018 | Carleton University, Canada

About: The Richard J. Van Loon Scholarship, valued at $5,000 for the 2017/2018 academic year, is awarded annually to an outstanding international student from an African country. UNIL Masters Scholarships in Lausanne Switzerland for Foreign Students, 2017

The new UNIL Master Scholarships are available for students who have graduated from a foreign university and whose academic results are very good. Foreign students are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

The University of Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland was founded in 1537 as a school of theology, before being made a university in 1890. Today about 13,500 students and 2,200 researchers study and work at the university.

The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university. Participants must prove a good knowledge of English in their motivation letter (number of years of Language classes taken, specific experience in an English-speaking environment etc.) and IELTS or TOEFL test.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue Master degree programme.

However, it is not possible to apply for the following programs:

  • Master of the School of Medicine
  • Master science and education practices
  • Master in Law from the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne

Warning: for the Master of Law (Master of Law), only two endorsements

“International and comparative law” and “legal theory” are open for a postulation on a Master’s scholarship.

Scholarship Award: The scholarship is awarded for the minimum period of the program chosen by the student. It amounts to CHF 1,600. – Per month from 15 September to 15 July (i.e. 10 months per year), for the entire duration of the master’s degree (1 year and a half or 2 years depending on the chosen master), except In case of definitive failure after the first year.

Candidates are made aware of the fact that the amount of the scholarship awarded is not sufficient to live in Switzerland.

Number of Scholarships: UNIL grants ten scholarships a year.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • Obtain a foreign university degree deemed equivalent to a Bachelor of UNIL before the start of the master program at the UNIL.
  • To have distinguished herself during her studies, notably by particularly brilliant academic results.
  • Have a minimum level of B2 (level according to the global scale of the European Language Portfolio) in French or English depending on the language of instruction of the chosen master.
  • Not already registered at UNIL.
  • To have paid the administrative fee of CHF 200.- (see document “list of documents to be attached to your application file”)

Abandonment of the program results in suspension of the scholarship.

Nationality: Foreign students are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Entrance Requirements: Students must obtain a foreign university degree deemed equivalent to a Bachelor of UNIL before the start of the master program at the UNIL.

Cosmopolis Advanced Scholarship Program for International Students, 2018 | Leiden University, Netherlands

About: The Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is one of Europe’s leading international research universities. It has seven faculties in the arts, sciences and social sciences spread over locations in Leiden and The Hague. The University has over 6,500 staff members and 26,900 students. The motto of the University is ‘Praesidium Libertatis’ – Bastion of Freedom.

Scholarship Description: The Institute for History is inviting applications for new research program: Cosmopolis Advanced, an initiative of the Institute for History at Leiden University (LU) in partnership with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta.

It offers a unique opening for advanced international students who aim for a Leiden PhD degree in the fields of Colonial & Global History or Archival & Postcolonial Studies.

Degree Level: Scholarships are available to pursue MA/PhD programme.

Country of Study: Netherland

Available Subject: Cosmopolis Advanced offers scholarships to graduate students from Indonesia and other countries at both the MA (18 months; 90 ecs) and the PhD (42 months; 210 ecs) level.

Scholarship Benefits: Throughout the program, Cosmopolis Advanced will actively recruit at least 10 students for the MA program based on a so-called Van Leur Scholarship (funded by Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, OC&W). The latter is specifically meant to stimulate research into the still most neglected VOC archives and the centuries’ old shared heritage it represents. After their selection by the scholarship committee, students will receive a scholarship for 18 months. For the Van Leur Scholarship, Leiden University waives the lion share (€ 22.000) of the regular tuition fee of € 25.000 (for 18 months). After the successful completion of the pilot-study, the Indonesian students compete for 5 Ph.D. positions (funded by UGM Indonesia). Students working on the VOC compete for 2 PhD-positions (funded by OC&W). Other students will compete for PhD-positions on the basis of external funding. For PhD-fellows, Leiden University will provide office space and the usual research facilities. In Indonesia, office space and research facilities will be provided by the Indonesian partners. A scholarship committee with representatives from both partners is responsible for the selection process. LU and UGM are responsible for the practical organization of the selection process of the Van Leur and UGM scholarships respectively. The committee will take decisions on the basis of the recommendations of LU (for Van Leur Scholarships) and UGM (for UGM scholarships). After selection, the selected students become regular MA and PhD-students at LU and are subject to the usual regulations regarding the program in which they are enrolled.

Number of Scholarships: 5 scholarships are available for the current round (for students starting in the summer of 2018). Another call for 5 scholarships will be issued for starting in 2019.

Eligibility: The program intends to attract the most talented international students at the postmaster level. Eligible candidates should be able to demonstrate:

(a) Excellence in archival/historical research, as evidenced by a master degree in history that includes a substantial research thesis of 30 ECTS or its equivalent. Candidates with an MA-degree in a language other than English must have certified proficiency at a minimal degree of 7.0 IELTS/ 100 TOEFL.

(b) Sufficient financial support for all relevant costs (including for living and accommodation) either through the Cosmopolis scholarship program or private or external funding.

Eligible Nationalities: International applicants are eligible to apply for this scholarship program.

How to Apply: The application has to be submitted via Goethe University’s MasterPortal. Open the application form for the Master program of your choice and you will be guided to the Scholarship application.

To apply for the scholarship program you will need:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) at least two-thirds of which have been completed at a university outside Germany plus a transcript of records
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors or other academic staff (signed by hand and officially sealed), stating your excellent or above-average performance (among the top 10% of graduates from your previous degree program)
  • A letter of motivation outlining a study plan and demonstrating your academic ability as well as your principle research interest
  • Proof of proficiency in German and/or English (depending on the language of instruction of the Master’s course)
  • A comprehensive CV in tabular form
  • To be admitted to one of the selected Master program (the selection process for both the Master’s program and the scholarship takes place at the same time)
  • To identify one of the research units which the Master program of your choice is related to. The respective research unit should match your research interest and be a potential workplace for you in the future (you have to select a single research unit) see: “Master Programmes” or “Research Units” for details on the research units).
  • You can apply for up to three degree programs. However, you are only allowed to apply for one relevant research unit in connection with your scholarship application
  • After you have completed the first half of the study period, you will have to submit a transcript of records proving your successful performance, in order to receive further funding (for Sinology and History after six months and for the remaining degree programs after one year).

Study in Germany: Fully-Funded Scholarship at University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) for International Students, 2018

University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is pleased to offer UDE-Scholarships to pursue Bachelor and Master degree program for winter 2017/2018 and summer 2018. International students are eligible to apply for this scholarship program.

The aim of the scholarship is to provide financial help to international students to study in Germany.

With over 43,000 students, the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is one of the ten largest in the Federal Republic. Their wide range of subjects ranges from the Humanities, Society and Education Sciences to Economics, Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Medicine. Since its foundation in 2003, UDE has developed into a universally recognized research university.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue Bachelor and Master degree program.

Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to learn any of the courses offered by the university.

Scholarship Award: The UDE-Scholarship is part of the Deutschland stipendium and awards excellent students studying at the University of Duisburg-Essen with 300 € per month for an entire academic year.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • All students who are properly enrolled at the University of Duisburg-Essen and are within their regular course duration
  • Everyone who intends to study at the University of Duisburg-Essen in the winter semester 2016/17 beginning in October (matriculation status will be checked at the beginning of the semester – matriculation at the time of application is not necessary)
  • Unfortunately, PhD students or students of degree courses liable to fees (e.g. Educational Media) cannot apply for a UDE-scholarship in general.

Chinese Government and African Union Fully Funded Scholarships for African Students, 2017/18

The Chinese government, through the African Union is offering scholarships to young Africans to study varying courses at various universities in China.

About the Award: The Department of Human Resources, Science, and Technology of the African Union Commission has the role of coordinating AU programs in education and human resource development; science, technology and innovation and youth empowerment.

The Department provides technical support to Member States in the development and implementation of programs towards harmonization, intra-African collaboration, and experience sharing, as well as quality assurance in these fields as contribution to the attainment of AU vision of integration, peace and prosperity in Africa. The Government of the People’s Republic of China has made scholarship offers to the AU through the Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology, to enable Africans to study in China for the 2017/2018 academic year.

Value of Program: The scholarship will cover the cost related to teaching and the administration of the university and the living expenses of the students from the fund of the foreign aid, supervising thesis.

  • The cost related to teaching includes tuition, teaching materials, field trips and study tours.
  • The basic living expenses include the accommodation, living allowances, the one-time settlement fee, and the medical insurance. Of which, the 3000 RMB of settlement fee will be given to the students in one time.
  • The living allowances (36000 RMB/year for Master students and 42000RMB/year for Doctor students) will be given to the students on a monthly basis. All the other funds will be managed by the university or Chinese.

Applications must be submitted with a cover letter stating motivation and how the qualification will enable you serve the continent.

Applications must also be accompanied with the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae including education, work experience and publications if any
  • Certified copies of relevant Certificates, transcripts and personal details page of national passport (at least 6 months validity)
  • Clear, colored passport photograph (3*4)
  • Recommendations from two academic referees,  one professional referee
  • Health certificate.
